Catalina with Sport Chalet – August 15, 2010

Good morning divers! Another beautiful day at Catalina. We left the dock at 7:00 AM and arrived at the island at 9:30. We first anchored up at Black Rock up on the west end. Visibility was approximately 30 – 40 feet. It was so nice at Black Rock we decided to stay there for the second dive.

After the second dive BBQ’ed hamburgers were ready for the divers on the back deck. We then moved over to Doc point for the third dive. Everyone really seemed to enjoy this spot, some were able to go around the point. After the third dive we pulled the hook and everyone enjoyed fresh baked brownies out of the oven with ice cream.

Congratulations to Instructor Rick Fong’s newly certified divers; Arthur Ayvazian, Christina Kyle and Mike Kyle. We hope to see you out again soon for your advanced certification.

Thank you to all to all the other certified divers that joined us today. Come out diving with us again soon.

The crew; Capt Mike, Capt Kim, Mr. Showtime and Paul

Catalina with Sport Chalet – August 14, 2010

We left the dock this morning with great conditions. We first anchored up near the tip of Lulu cove. The first dive was great with approximately 40-50 feet. During the second dive we slipped anchor and had to re-set our hook and moved over a bit in the cove at Lulu. We BBQ’ed the Cee Ray Cole Slaw burgers on the back deck of the boat and they were ready when divers came up after the second dive.

For the third dive we stayed in the same spot since there was so much boat traffic.

We want to thank instructors Jim Mandlebaum, Gary Thomsen, Karen Conmy and Dan Dinette from Sport Chalet for joining us with your classes. Congratulations to all the new divers.

Thank you all! Capt Mike, Capt Kim, Mr. Showtime and Paul

2-day Backside Catalina

We left at 4AM Monday morning, August 9 and headed over to the island. The water was so calm we decided to go around the corner of the west end and to our amazement; it was the same on the back side. We dropped the hook on Centinal and did one dive with about 50 foot vis. We cruised by pedestal and decided to do a dive there. We then went to Cape of Cortez and set in Cortez Cove. There was awesome visibility and marine life, the divers decided they wanted to stay and dive there until dusk. We then cruised around and finished diving that night at Black Rock where we anchored all night and did some night dives to prepare for opening lobster season. The next morning we went to Arrow Point cove where the divers decided they wanted to stay all day until we left the island.

Thank you Ocean Gear in Huntington Beach for a great charter!

Starlight

On Sunday, August 8, 2010, we headed out for Catalina with a grouping of 30 divers from Sport Chalet. The seas were calm for a good crossing. We thought we’d start our day at Starlight and do a couple of dives. Visibility was about 35 to 40 feet. We had three classes on-board, two of them open water and one dry-suit class. After the second dive we decided to stay and do our third as well because one of the divers had lost some equipment and we wanted to give them a chance to recover it with a search and recovery dive, which ended up being good experience. As well, after all these years, Dive Master Lee Anthony found the sailboat wreck that has been there for a while, he was pretty excited about this as he shared his experience with us. Overall it was another great day of diving, there is so much to see at this site.

Thank you instructors Erika and Marc Vermill, Jerry Saros and Scot Mathis for bringing your classes out on the Cee Ray and joining us. Also a big “thank you” to Aubrey Shaughnessy for joining us as well, it was great to finally meet you!

See you next time! Capt Mike & Capt Kim

Parson’s Landing / Black Rock

We left the dock at 6:50 and motored out of the harbor passing the LA Light. The passengers didn’t even realize we were actually out of the harbor because the water was so calm, it was literally like a lake. We arrived at Catalina at approximately 9:30 and anchored up at Parson’s Landing. We did our first two dives at this location. Visibility was approximately 50 feet and water temp was 64*F. We then anchored for our third dive at Black Rock. The water temp dropped a little to 62*F and visibility also dropped down to about 30 feet where it was really clear. We had a large group from Sport Chalet in the Ventura and Oxnard areas; thank you so much for diving the Cee Ray! It was a great time had by all.
